Kawartha Community Midwives has been providing care to families in the Peterborough and surrounding communities since 1995. We respect diverse cultural traditions.
We are located in a beautiful Victorian house in downtown Peterborough.
We offer personalized, professional care throughout the pregnancy, labour and birth, and up to six weeks postpartum. We are fully covered by Ontario Ministry of Health so there are no extra costs.
We are a group practice of six Registered Midwives. We work within the standards and guidelines of the College of Midwives of Ontario.
The Ontario model of midwifery care is based on the following principles:
Informed Choice - Midwifery care is based on providing care that respects the birthing woman as the primary decision-maker. Midwives give information to help you make informed decisions. We will work to support your decisions.
Continuity of Care- You will be assigned to a team of three midwives who will alternately see you during your pregnancy. Two of these midwives will attend your birth. On occasion, when we have multiple births in progress, you may have a midwife from another team who will assist one of your primary midwives. We also have coverage with a Registered Nurse as a second attendent for births in exceptional circumstances if no second midwife is available.
A team member is on call by pager 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for any urgent calls. The clinic is open Monday to Fridays from 9 am to 5 pm and messages can also be left on the clinic answering machine for non-urgent calls. Most visits are at the clinic, but we come to your home for one pre-natal visit, and also provide several hospital and/or home visits within the firs ten days after your baby is born. Further postpartum visits are at the clinic.
Choice of Birth place- With midwifery care, you have a choice of birth place. If you are requesting a hospital birth, we have privileges at both Peterborough Regional Health Centre and Northumberland Hills Hopsital (Cobourg). If you have had a healthy pregnancy, you can also choose to have a home birth. In certain circumstances, we also have a clinic labour room with an adjoining tub available.
Call early in your pregnancy if your are interested in midwifery care.
